Dive Brief:
- Stinker Stores has modernized its stores’ information technology through an agreement with digital commerce solutions firm NCR Voyix, the companies announced last week.
- Deploying the NCR Voyix Edge system has virtualized Stinker’s point-of-sale system and enhanced both its legacy and modern technology, the announcement said. This allows it to roll out real-time promotions across all of its stores and maximizes the performance of its store infrastructure.
- This move echoes Casey’s decision to use Acumera’s software to help manage and scale its legacy tech systems, container-based applications and digital content, as well as offer fully integrated monitoring and observability.
Dive Insight:
From adding mobile ordering to updating servers, centralizing computer management and boosting access to real-time insights, technology updates are vital to streamlining operations and keeping up with ever-changing customer expectations.
Stinker noted one of the advantages of NCR Voyix Edge is that it allows stores to run the latest software on older hardware, resulting in savings on both POS and back-office systems. The system also includes dual-edge servers and rollback features, which should limit downtime from problematic technology updates.
Stinker also gets remote maintenance and support, which is expected to cut the number of support tickets in half.
Because the retailer can create a pre-configured virtualized server, it can make new store rollouts up to 70% faster. This could be important for Stinker, which, according to the announcement, is looking to grow via acquisitions.
The system also allows Stinker to integrate new technology much faster.
Stinker first began working with NCR Voyix in late 2020, a spokesperson for NCR Voyix said via email. The companies expanded their partnership in 2023, when Stinker began deploying vFuel Store, and then in May of 2024 did a complete rollout of the Retail Point of Sale, Software Defined Store, and vFuel solutions across all of its stores and fuel dispensers.
In the c-store space, Atlanta-based NCR has become a prominent provider of self-checkout kiosks, point-of-sale systems, e-commerce and edge computing platforms, analytics and loyalty programs. Its c-store partners include Circle K, BP, Shell, Pilot, Stinker Stores and Weigel’s, according to its website.
Boise, Idaho-based Stinker Stores has more than 100 locations in Colorado, Idaho and Wyoming. The Stinker family of companies also includes Arrowrock Supply — a grocery and tobacco wholesaler — and trucking company Westpoint Transportation.
