When Maverik announced in April 2023 that it had agreed to buy Kum & Go, potential rebrands were one of the first things on people’s minds.
When the deal closed later that year former CEO Chuck Magelet shared that the company would change Kum & Go stores in Utah, Colorado, Idaho and parts of Wyoming to the Maverik banner. As for rebranding stores in other states where Kum & Go operated, such as Missouri and Michigan, Maverik was “still figuring that out,” Maggelet said at the time.
The banners’ starting point
Three of these states were among the five where both banners overlapped. The last rebranding target, Idaho, did not have any Kum & Go locations, although some were in the works.
The first round of rebrands began early in 2024. For several months, Maverik worked on those plans while growing organically, opening its first site in Montana and breaking ground on the first location for either banner in Kansas.
That objective changed in October, when Maverik revealed plans to rebrand Kum & Go sites in Oklahoma. The next month, the company confirmed its intent to rebrand all Kum & Go locations, although a company spokesperson emphasized that Maverik would take a “thoughtful, market-by-market approach” before confirming each state.
