Dive Brief:
- Maverik has broken ground on its first Kansas stores, the convenience retailer announced on Wednesday.
- The two inaugural locations will both be in Garden City, about 200 miles east of the banner’s nearest site in Pueblo, Colorado. Both are expected to open by mid-2025.
- This expansion comes as the company, which completed its acquisition of Kum & Go a year ago, progresses towards rebranding many of the Iowa-based retailer’s stores to the Maverik name.
Dive Insight:
While Maverik continues incorporating the Kum & Go stores, its expansion into Kansas signals that the company isn’t resting on its laurels.
“Maverik is focused on expanding in areas that have unmet needs for fuel, great food and adventure,” said Maverik CEO Crystal Maggelet, who took over that role in July after former leader Chuck Maggelet stepped down in May.
Both sites will feature Maverik’s foodservice and coffee programs as well as a picnic area. Meanwhile, the 4,425-square-foot store at 2601 East Mary St. will center around an auto fuel forecourt, and the 5,982-square-foot store at 50 East Acraway Ave. will cater to long-distance and professional drivers with truck and RV fueling lanes and an RV dump.
Maverik also announced it has begun rebranding Kum & Go’s sites in Wyoming. The last of those stores are expected to reopen with the company’s new look in early October, according to Maverik’s website.
Kansas is the 14th state of operation for the Maverik brand. Between the Maverik and Kum & Go banners, the company will have more than 840 stores in 21 states once these stores open.
