Marathon Petroleum Corporation’s board of directors has unanimously named Maryann Mannen as the energy firm’s new CEO, effective Aug. 1, according to a company announcement.
Mannen, who has been Marathon’s president since January and was its chief financial officer for three years before that, will succeed Michael Hennigan, who is transitioning to the company’s board of directors.
"Our confidence in Maryann as the right leader for our company is based on her contributions to the MPC success story, as well as her proven track record as an energy-sector veteran of 38 years,” Hennigan said in the announcement. “She has demonstrated a keen understanding of our business, clear judgment and a strong financial expertise that will serve shareholders well."
For nearly four years, Hennigan held both the president and CEO positions at Marathon. That changed in January when the company decided to split the two roles and named Mannen president.
As president, Mannen oversees Marathon’s refining business and commercial performance, as well as its health, environment, safety and security functions.
Prior to joining Marathon in 2021, Mannen was executive vice president and chief financial officer of TechnipFMC, a global engineering services and energy technology company. From 2007 to 2017, she held several executive roles with energy technology firm FMC Technologies, such as CFO and treasurer.
Mannen has also served as a member of the board of directors of the general partner of MPLX LP since February 2021.
Hennigan — Marathon’s CEO since March 2020 — will become executive chairman of the board. Incumbent independent chairman John Surma has been elected lead independent director.
Findlay, Ohio-based Marathon Petroleum operates the largest refining system in the U.S. The company also markets over 6,000 branded fuel locations across the country under the Marathon and ARCO banners.
