Few stories have rattled the convenience store industry in recent memory more than the saga of Mountain Express Oil.
The company, which was founded in 2000 as a fuel distributor before adding c-store operator to its description two decades later, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March 2023. What at first appeared to be a standard bankruptcy case unraveled into a series of courtroom battles and financial mishaps that resulted in Mountain Express failing to sell its assets and terminating all operations and employees by August.
This week, C-Store Dive published its deep dive into Mountain Express, which included interviews with former full-time employees, landlords and bankruptcy attorneys. Those individuals — as well as hundreds of pages of court documents — accused Mountain Express’ leadership of not only funneling money from the organization, but also instilling a secretive company culture that ultimately led to its demise.
