Dive Brief:
- GetGo Café + Market, the c-store arm of supermarket chain Giant Eagle, has sold four of its locations in Indianapolis, a spokesperson for the retailer said in an email.
- The stores were sold for a total of $19.5 million to Darshan Darar, an independent retailer who owns about 20 c-store and fueling locations in Indianapolis, Pat Rooney, the attorney who worked with the buyer, said in an interview. Darar acquired the GetGo locations under four separate corporations, Rooney said.
- GetGo has no plans to close any other GetGo locations in Indiana, where it now operates 58 stores — nine of which are in Indianapolis, the spokesperson said.
Dive Insight:
The spokesperson said that GetGo offloaded these four stores due to “unique challenges that made it difficult to maintain” the company’s high standards and food-first approach. The spokesperson declined to comment further on these challenges.
Staff at these locations were given the option to transfer to other GetGo locations in the surrounding areas, with most accepting, the spokesperson said.
“We remain committed to this area and will continue to invest in both our GetGo and Market District brands here,” the spokesperson said.
The stores are located at 2102 N Post Road, 6279 West 38th Street, 1545 East 38th Street and 5585 Georgetown Road. GetGo officially closed them on April 17, and new management is expected to reopen them within the next week or so. Each location had BP-branded fuel, which new management will retain moving forward, the spokesperson said.
Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle owns and operates more than 260 GetGo c-stores in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Maryland and West Virginia in a variety of formats, with some locations also including WetGo car washes.
