Checkout technology company Mashgin has named Steve O'Toole its new head of business development for convenience and fuel retail, according to a Wednesday announcement.
Mashgin, which has deployed its touch-free checkout platforms at large c-store retailers such as Circle K, Delek US Holdings and Refuel in recent years, tapped O’Toole to forge “strong partnerships with leading fuel retailers” and solidify the company as a leader in the c-store self-checkout space, according to the announcement.
O’Toole has more than two decades of experience in the fuel, retail technology and c-store industries. He notably was BP’s U.S. business information manager from 2003 to 2006, where he led all information technology at the oil giant’s U.S. retail stores and managed its Global Site Systems program, according to his LinkedIn bio.
O’Toole also led global IT operations for international retailer Puma Energy, which operates nearly 2,000 retail sites across Latin and South America, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia.
O’Toole also held various roles with banking, checkout and ATM company NCR Corporation between 2017 and 2021, including global head of convenience and fuel retail sales. His most recent position prior to joining Mashgin was vice president of sales and business development with loyalty and e-commerce company Stuzo, which works with several c-store retailers.
“Steve knows the fuel retail industry like few others and will be an invaluable addition to Mashgin’s team,” Mashgin’s Senior Vice President of Strategic Partnerships Jack Hogan said in the announcement.
As of this spring, Mashgin had deployed its checkout machines, which automatically recognize products placed in a tray situated beneath its tech-enhanced cameras, in over 2,700 stores, including hundreds of Circle K’s. Delek launched the technology in 70 Delek c-stores earlier this year, which resulted in a 67% drop in checkout times, while Refuel outlined plans to deploy it at 15 of its 200-plus locations.
