Chestnut Market has deployed the first Mashgin-enabled self-checkout kiosk at a Shell-branded convenience store, according to a Wednesday announcement.
Chestnut Market, which operates 75 convenience stores on the East Coast, jumped into self-checkout last year when it debuted Mashgin’s technology at its c-store on the Hutchinson River Parkway in White Plains, New York. The launch was so successful — it completely eliminated checkout lines — that the retailer is expanding the partnership, Faheem Jamal, director of retail, said in the announcement.
Chestnut Market plans to add Mashgin’s AI-powered checkout system in more stores later this year, according to the announcement.
“Retail is detail, and keeping lines short is a big one,” Jamal said. “This continued expansion demonstrates our commitment to enhancing the customer experience through innovative, practical technology.”
Although this marks Shell’s first launch with Mashgin, the oil giant and c-store retailer has used self-checkout in its stores for years. In 2023, Shell partnered with c-store tech vendor Gilbarco Veeder-Root to deploy Gilbarco’s Invenco iNFX payment solution across nearly 13,000 c-stores in the U.S.
Elaine Mohr, general manager of operations for Shell Mobility Americas, said Mashgin’s checkout technology is “one of the quickest and most intuitive” point-of-sale options for its fuel stations. At this store, Mashgin’s tech integrates with Shell's payment network through Invenco’s EDGEPro device.
“This seamless integration demonstrates the value brought to stores with EDGEPro technology as it rolls out across the country,” Mohr said.
While some c-store retailers like Chestnut Market are investing in self-checkout kiosks, other operators have yet to get started with the technology. Experts from Mashgin and other tech vendors have suggested c-store retailers do proper due diligence before installing these systems, such as considering in-store placement and if they’ll want the kiosks to still offer cash.
