Dive Brief:
- Buc-ee’s has added Ohio to the list of states it’s targeting with its massive c-stores, according to a Facebook post by Jeff Gore, mayor of Huber Heights, Ohio.
- The location will be up for informal review with the city’s planning commission on Aug. 15. No approval has yet been given and no target opening date has yet been announced for this location.
- The Lake Jackson, Texas-based retailer’s stores are mostly found in its home state, but in recent years, the company has made a huge push into other parts of the country.
Dive Insight:
Counting Ohio, Buc-ee’s has stores in or plans to build in 12 other states, mostly focused in the Southeast. There are also reports of a store coming to North Carolina — Buc-ee’s second try at that state — though no official announcement has been made.
The Huber Heights location, which would sit less than 10 miles north of Dayton, would feature a 75,000-square-foot store, 120 fueling positions and nearly 600 parking spaces for cars. There would also be 11 RV and bus parking spaces, 24 Tesla charging spots and 20 Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant parking spots.
Buc-ee’s growth outside of Texas
Buc-ee’s convenience stores have gained notoriety for their large, clean bathrooms, wide array of branded merchandise and proprietary food, including made-to-order sandwiches and fudge.
Buc-ee’s is the second big-name c-store making a move to Huber Heights in the past month. Wawa is also looking to build its second Ohio location in that area. Plans for that site are also expected to move forward in August.
Founded in 1982, Lake Jackson, Texas-based Buc-ee’s operates 46 stores across Texas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina.
