With its army of fans and a reputation for the cleanest bathrooms a traveler could want, Buc-ee’s is on a mission to bring its Texas-sized convenience stores to more customers outside of the Lone Star State.
Starting in 2019, when it unveiled its first Alabama store, Buc-ee’s has opened 10 locations in other states, including Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina and Tennessee.
The one-of-a-kind c-store chain is continuing to expand at a rapid pace, and is now looking to open in new regions of the country. It has plans to add stores in Colorado, Missouri, Wisconsin, Virginia and Louisiana in addition to building sites in other states, like Kentucky, where it already operates.
The map below outlines Buc-ee’s growth outside of Texas. It includes both existing locations outside of the Lone Star State as well as upcoming stores. Scroll over each node for more information about the location.
Mapping Buc-ee's store footprint beyond Texas
Buc-ee’s expansion ranges from well underway projects — the Colorado and Missouri locations are expected to open next year — to some which are still in initial zoning approval stages. A location in New Kent county, Virginia, came to light thanks to a Facebook post by the county’s economic development department.
And Buc-ee’s isn’t done growing in Texas, either. It currently has two Lone Star locations in progress, to join the 34 that already exist.
Buc-ee’s store size helps it stand out from the crowd. While the majority of c-stores have less than 10,000 square feet of retail space, the non-Texas Buc-ee’s locations are all larger than your average grocery store, spanning from just over 50,000 square feet to as much as 80,000 square feet. They generally have more than 100 fueling stations as well — but only for smaller vehicles, as Buc-ee’s doesn’t allow 18-wheelers.
Naturally, the locations bring a lot of traffic and often necessitate infrastructure updates. Traffic projections for the Wisconsin location anticipate more than a thousand trips in or out of the site at peak hours. While Buc-ee’s has not changed its timeline for the Louisiana store opening, currently scheduled for 2025, area officials are worried about the pace of needed traffic studies and road updates and what impact delays there might have.
Buc-ee’s was founded in 1982 and currently has 44 locations. Beyond its supersized footprint, the company is well known for its $16 per hour starting wages, fresh food options and branded merchandise featuring its beaver mascot.
