Dive Brief:
- Amazon Prime members can save 10 cents per gallon on fill-ups at about 7,000 BP, Amoco and Ampm locations across the U.S., the tech giant announced on Wednesday.
- Users simply link their Amazon account to BP’s new Earnify app and select the corresponding pump to and pay, which can be done through the app or by inputting their phone number into the pump.
- The 10 cents in savings includes the 5 cents off Earnify members already get and another 5 cents for linking the Earnify and Amazon accounts together.
Dive Insight:
This partnership is the first fuel savings offer incorporated into Amazon’s Prime membership. It could also be an opportunity for BP to attract new customers as convenience retailers continually look to make their locations stand out among competitors.
“We’re constantly looking to add more value for Prime members and perhaps the broadest and most popular additional benefit we could offer is fuel savings,” said Jamil Ghani, vice president of Amazon Prime, in the announcement.
While Amazon no longer reveals the number of Prime subscribers, estimates from consumer research firm Consumer Intelligence Research Partners put Prime membership at about 180 million as of Q2 2024.
The partnership is expected to expand to electric vehicle charging discounts with BP Pulse next year, according to the announcement. Further details on that program will be shared closer to deployment.
Customers taking advantage of the savings will also be earning points on all their fuel purchases through Earnify, which can be used for discounts at the pump or inside participating c-stores.
Earnify was first unveiled earlier this month. It took over for BP’s BPme and Ampm rewards programs, both of which are no longer supported at locations where Earnify is available
An Amazon Prime membership costs $14.99 per month or $139 per year, with discounts for college students and EBT or Medicaid cardholders.
